WOMEN SPIES?

Hashem has agreed to allow Moshe to send a reconnaissance party to check out eretz Canaan, see the lay of the land, and inform us as to how best to proceed.   The spies will be handpicked by Moshe and will consist of 1 person for each tribe, excluding Levi as they will not inherit any land.  Moshe, upon announcing Hashem’s decision, also informed us as to their discussion.  It went as follows:

Hashem- Moshe, you may send the spies, if you so wish, to satisfy the people’s curiosity.  It’s obvious that they do not yet trust Me and need verification for My words.

Moshe- Chas V’shalom, they do trust in You.  They just don’t want to rely upon a miracle and are doing as much as possible in preparation to enter Canaan.  Who should I send?

Hashem- You will have to make that decision.  But you are to send 1 person from each tribe.  You know who is really a tzaddik and does not just appear to be one. Those are the people to send.  It may be advantageous to send the women in place of the men, as the women are ardent Zionists and have continually demonstrated complete trust in Me.

Moshe- How could I send women?  I would never forgive myself if something happened to them.   And, besides that, the men also want to reach Canaan.  They love the land just as much as the women.

Hashem- If that’s how you feel then send the men.

Moshe will be announcing his choices immediately.

RECONNAISSANCE TEAM CHOSEN

The following men have been picked to join the away team:

Reuven- Shamua B. Zakor
Shimon- Shafat b. Chori
Yehudah- Caleb b. Yefunah
Yissachar- Yigal b. Yosef
Ephraim- Hoshaya b. Nun
Binyamin- Palti b. Rafu
Zevulun- Gadial b. Sodi
Menashe- Gadi b. Susi
Dan- Amiel b. Gamali
Asher- S’tor b. Michael
Naphtali- Nachbi b. Vafsi
Gad- Gaul b. Machi

Each of these gentlemen, princes in their own right, have continually demonstrated a high level of kedusha and indeed was picked according to their level of kedusha.   Imagine: knowing how great Hoshaya, whom Moshe calls Yehoshua, is because he spends all his time learning and serving Moshe and, yet is only 5th on the list, how great must Shamua be!  I can hardly wait for their findings.

 CANAAN IS A DEATH TRAP

Baruch Hashem we forced Moshe’s hand to send the spies.  Now we know the real story and it doesn’t look so rosy.  While it is true that the land is flowing with milk and honey, a very nice imagery of fertile land, apparently, the land is also freakish in nature.  The fruits that were brought back, as per order of Moshe, were gigantic.

The air was hard for our spies to breath and is the land of giants.   It would seem, due to their extraordinary size, they fit right into the landscape.  But people like us will not be able to survive, as the spies observed many a funerals that were taking place.  The cities are also fortified and the locals are very strong.  The neighboring countries are not friendly and we really don’t have a fighting chance.  They outnumber us!  At least that is what 10 out of 12 spies reported.  It was only Yehoshua and Caleb who reported differently, saying that with Hashem’s help we could defeat the enemies and that we must not lose heart.  We must just trust in Hashem and proceed as Moshe tells us.  Well, we expected Yehoshua to feel this way because he’s Moshe’s student.  But when Caleb, who appeared to be siding with the other 10, suddenly jumped ship and joined Yehoshua, it sent a ripple throughout the people and cast a little doubt on the original report.  Now we don’t know who to believe!

SPIES DIE IN PLAGUE

For those who were questioning which side to join, Hashem has made the decision for us…Yehoshua and Caleb.  The other 10 have died. Their tongues swelled up and worms emerged from their tongues, a fitting end to people who spoke lashon hara-slander.  But, due to our moment of despair and wanting to believe the incorrect report, we have received the death sentence of karat-spiritual excision and will never see Canaan.  We are to remain in this desert for the next 38 years and when we reach our 60th birthday, we will die.  The only positive news is that our children will make it to Canaan.  Why couldn’t we just trust Hashem?
