Adult Education - Where Intellect and Spirituality are Fused

Winter Semester 2008

Beth Abraham is proud to announce the following course selections.  The entire community is invited to learn with us and we look forward to your participation.  There is no cost for these classes and you need not be a member of any of the shuls or JCC.  If you’re interested in exploring the Jewish Heritage then these are the classes for you.  All classes are presented in English and there are no prerequisites necessary to join.  (If you can’t attend the classes but would like to participate, drop off a tape recorder with tape and learn the material at your convenience.)

If you ever wanted to approach Torah in an exciting manner this is your chance; the courses are as follows:

Sunday:  8:45 A.M. - Talmud: Moad Katan – This tractate of Talmud discusses the various laws of chol hamoad—the intermediate days of the festivals—as well as the laws of mourning.

Sunday:  9:30 A.M. - Malachim 1 - Joins us as we read about our various kings and where they went "wrong".

Sunday:  10:30 A.M. - Job - This book explores the question of why bad things happen to good people.

Sunday:  11:30 A.M. - Moral Development - Study The Palm Tree Of Devorah by Rabbi Moshe Cordovero.  The Rabbi develops a whole system of moral development within the sphere of Jewish Mysticism.

Sunday:  6:00 P.M. - Conversational Hebrew - Using the book Hayesod, we steadily increase our understanding of the Hebrew language.  While we are well into the book, people with some former background could probably catch up very quickly.

Monday - Friday:  6:00 A.M.  - Talmud: Shabbat – This tractate of the Talmud discusses the various laws of Shabbat.  Interestingly enough, it is also the source material for the holiday of Chanukah.

Monday - Thursday:  6-8 P.M.  - Bait Midrash ProgramLearn the weekly pasha and get a daily dose of Jewish Law.

Shabbat: 45 minutes before mincha - Join us in the exploration of the themes of the weekly parsha

The classes, with the exceptions of daily Halacha and Laws of  Shabbat, are normally one hour long.  All classes are held in English and no previous knowledge is necessary.  Books may be purchased through the Shul.  Books will be helpful, as they will allow you to review the material at home, as well as to prepare for class. If you would like to have other classes, please contact me in the shul office.  I look forward to seeing everyone at class.  All classes meet at 145 York Street.

Hope to see you there!
